Introduction:
Organic reactions are SO important to our everyday lives! Chemists solve problems by using one or more of thousands of types of reactions to create one organic compound from a different organic compound. These organic compounds might be a new drug to treat cancer or even a polymer that might be cheaper to make and that breaks down easier in the environment; the options are endless!
This Web-Based Learning Tool is designed to help you better understand organic reactions (at a Grade 12 University level), by completing modules on each of the major types of organic reactions, practicing your skills at recognizing and predicting products of organic reactions and finally by completing a final task in which you are a chemical engineer who has been asked to design a synthesis pathway for a specific organic compound.
Learning Goals:
After completing this Web-Based Learning Tool, you should be able to:
when initially given a reactant or reactants.
- Recognize and identify the 5 different types of organic reactions (addition, substitution, condensation/elimination, combustion & oxidation).
- Predict the products of the 5 different types of organic reactions (addition, substitution, condensation/elimination, combustion & oxidation).
when initially given a reactant or reactants.
